Cortez NJROTC Academic Team Ranked First in the District

    On Saturday, February, 1, 2020, the Cortez NJROTC Academic team was the top-ranking Navy team in the district out of 13 Glendale Union High School District teams that competed in an Area Eleven Navy JROTC Academic “Brain Brawl” competition hosted by Moon Valley High School.


     The team was led by Frank Fernandez and assisted by Jonathon Grice, Yulma Sandoval, Justice Cashman, and Zayne Matthews.  The NJROTC academic teams participated in a fast-paced “Jeopardy-style” buzzer competition by answering naval science-based curriculum questions on Maritime History, Leadership, Naval Knowledge and Nautical Sciences. After five arduous preliminary rounds, only the top four finishing teams advanced to the championship playoff.  Cortez finished in 4th-place behind two teams from Cienega and from Apache Junction High School.


     Cortez NJROTC previously placed third in a regional qualifier in during first semester which earned our academic team an automatic seed at the Navy JROTC Western Regional Competition in Reedley, California this spring.



First Place:      Cienega 1 NJROTC

Second Place: Cienega 2 NJROTC

Third Place:    Apache Junction NJROTC

Fourth Place:   Cortez NJROTC
