Cortez clinches 3rd place in the Navy JROTC Academic Brain Brawl Competition

On Saturday, September 14, 2019, the Cortez Navy JROTC Academic team placed third out of 14 teams in an Area Eleven Navy JROTC Academic “Brain Brawl” competition hosted by Moon Valley High School NJROTC.

The team was led by Frank Fernandez and assisted by Jonathon Grice, Consuelo Toledo, and Wyatt Ostrander.  The NJROTC academic teams participated in a fast-paced buzzer competition by answering naval science-based curriculum questions.  After five grueling preliminary rounds, only the top four finishing teams advanced to the championship playoff.  At the end of the final championship round, only 10 points separated the top three finishers: Moon Valley, Apache Junction, and Cortez.  Cortez and Apache Junction were tied for second-place and after a lightning round to break the tie, Apache Junction captured 2nd place over Cortez.  Moon Valley’s first place win earns them an automatic qualification for the Navy JROTC Western Regional Competition in California next spring. Bravo Zulu Colts, way to use that gray matter!
