Cortez High School, a three-year Beat the Odds partner, truly demonstrates that demography isn't destiny. It is ranked among the nation's best high schools by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek. The Arizona Department of Education rates Cortez an "A" school, improving student performance from a "B" in 2012.

"I am proud of everyone's efforts to make Cortez a school of high standards" Principal Reid Chitwood said. "It has always been our vision to have Cortez be an island in the community where our children can receive a high quality education in a safe, nurturing environment.

"We are working to keep our school's score of an 'A' and creating more pathways for student achievement. Faculty and staff made this possible through their diligence to make Cortez a great school. Our parents and community are very supportive. Most importantly, our students have poured their hearts and souls into their studies."
