March Madness NJROTC styleOn the last Wednesday of every month during the school year, the Cortez High School Navy JROTC Unit performs community service by assisting the Phoenix Chapter of the Military Family Support Group as they pack Care Packages from Home for sailors, soldiers, airmen, and marines stationed overseas.  Recently those packages have been helping to support the morale of our troops in Afghanistan as well as the recently deployed troops working in support of the West Africa Ebola outbreak.  The military support group also joins with Blue Star Moms and Gold Star Moms from Phoenix in this effort.  Those groups are moms who have sons or daughters currently serving, or have lost someone in combat operations.  With this month, the focus by the Navy JROTC unit was to both raise canned goods and money which is used to mail the packages to the east coast where they put on military transport when space is available.

Since the nation is wrapped up in the fever that is college basketball during the month of March each year, the Cortez NJROTC cadets put out a challenge that was answered by the Greenway NJROTC unit and the "March Madness" contest was set in motion.  The Greenway Demons gathered 172 cans and raised $334.  Not to be outdone, the Cortez Colts gathered 215 cans and raised $454 to bring the month's total to 387 cans and $788 for the Blue Star Mons and Military Family Support Group.

Pictured above are the Community Service Officers from Cortez, Cadet Chief Petty Officer Haylee Reed and from Greenway, Cadet Master Chief Petty Officer Zachariah Perez making the presentation to Mr. Mike Roy of the Phoenix Chapter of the Military Family Support Group.
